What is NYLT?
National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program that gives youth members leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units, and anywhere they need to lead themselves and others.
The course is taught in a troop and patrol outdoor setting, with an emphasis on putting each skill to use right away in a fun environment. Concepts are introduced early and built on throughout the course, with memory aids that help participants learn and use the skills faster.
NYLT blends modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of Scouting. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, games, and adventures, participants work and play together and leave with the skills and confidence to lead well.

Every lesson comes back to what a leader must be, know, and do, taught with a clear focus on how to do it. The skills come alive as each patrol sets out on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

For Scouts
As you advance, you'll get plenty of chances to lead your fellow Scouts through activities, projects, and outings. NYLT gives you the skills to lead them to success: how to communicate well, resolve conflicts, and work toward a vision. You'll work as part of a patrol, practicing your Scouting skills and growing together as a team, with games and activities that make every lesson stick.
NYLT is staffed by Scouts like you who've been through the course and spent months preparing to teach it. They make NYLT more than a class; it's a leadership experience you'll never forget. You'll bring home skills, games, songs, and ideas that will make your unit better, and you might discover something about yourself as you set a personal vision and the goals to reach it.
For Unit Leaders
NYLT brings new skills and fresh enthusiasm to your youth leadership. Unit leaders have the primary responsibility for training their youth leaders, and NYLT supports that role by helping Scouts build critical skills like setting goals, communicating, and developing a team. Built on the patrol method, it's ideal for youth leaders at every level and valuable for older Scouts and Venturers too.
The course is taught and run entirely by a highly trained youth staff who attended NYLT themselves and invest more than 300 hours preparing each course. NYLT aligns with the adult training in Wood Badge and is part of the leadership cycle that starts with ILST and continues with NAYLE.
For Parents
NYLT teaches leadership skills that help your Scout build stronger relationships and make better decisions throughout life. It's a Scouting program, but the skills reach far beyond Scouting, giving your Scout the confidence to take on anything at school, at home, or wherever life leads.
All NYLT asks of your Scout is an openness to learning and the maturity to put these skills to use. The course is taught by talented youth leaders who prepare for six months, and set the example of what NYLT leadership looks like in action, all in a fun outdoor setting.
Who Can Attend?
Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts can attend NYLT if they meet these national requirements before the course begins.
Scouts BSA
Age 13 or older
First Class rank or higher
Completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)
Venturing and Sea Scouts
Age 14, or age 13 and completed 8th grade
Completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC) or Ships (ILSS)
Need ILST, ILSC, or ILSS first? Your unit leader can run it, or check the council calendar for upcoming courses.
