The Boy Scouts of America ~ Southwest Florida Council is a charitable a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

What is Friends of Scouting?

Friends of Scouting is the annual campaign where the Southwest Florida Council asks Scouting families, businesses and civic-minded citizens to support our mission of providing the Scouting program to thousands of young people in Southwest Florida.

Why should I give to Friends of Scouting?

Friends of Scouting provides roughly one-quarter of the money needed to operate the Southwest Florida Council's Scouting camps, programs and facilities for a calendar year. These camping and training facilities are the "outdoor classrooms" in which Scouts have fun, learn leadership skills and develop into better young men and women. The Southwest Florida Council spends approximately $250 per Scout each year to deliver these benefits and much more.

I already paid my child's registration and his unit collects annual dues. Haven't I already supported Scouting?

Your child's registration fee goes directly to the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America. If your child's Scout unit collects dues, that money stays with the unit to help pay for trips and other activities. None of that money helps the Southwest Florida Council:

  • Subsidize our programs, camps, support servicesso fees are not significantly higher thus unaffordable for many.
  • Maintain the Council Service Center and Conference Center with a full-time staff to support the volunteers who deliver the Scouting program.
  • Maintain and operate the two Scout Camps and all the facilities including the pools, COPE course, buildings, etc.
  • Offer leadership training, instructional videos and free literature.
  • Support Scouting communities through the monthly roundtable meetings and the council web site.
  • Training thousands of adult volunteer leaders in youth protection
  • Providing programs like Cub Scout Day Camp, Cub-O-Ree, Merit Badge Days, Winter Camp, National Youth Leadership Training, Venturing Activities and  Rendevous Weekend, and annual Scout Shows.

The Southwest Florida Council is overseen by volunteers who serve on its Executive Board. This group employs a Scout Executive who is responsible for directing a professional and office staff who support the 21,000 youth and 3,000 adult volunteers across our 7 county region. These individuals coordinate recruiting of new members, starting new units, training, program development, district and council activities and oversee overall operation for the Scouting program in our districts and council region. The council also operates the 1,200 acre Price Saunders Scout Reservation - Camp Miles; 185 acre Camp Flying Eagle; the council volunteer service center and National B.S.A. retail Scout Shop in Fort Myers to support units, adult volunteers and its Scouting youth members/parents across the region.

It takes a full time support group and we only have 8 professional, 4 office and 2 camp rangers that oversee 21,000 youth members and 3,00 adult leaders in our council region. With the leadership of our organization, the 3,000 adult volunteers are able to efficiently and effectively provide quality programs to over 21,000 youth in all of the various Scouting programs in our region.

Our 2010 operating budget for our 7 county council region was $2,193,450. This is a significant 10% decrease versus our 2009 budget.
